Igawa Wins Opener

Igawa Wins Opener
Kei Igawa won the home opener for the Yankees. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (minor league), that is. He tossed 46 strikes out of 73 pitches, but gave up 3 home runs. The SWB Yankees won the game 6-5. You can see the box score and more here.

Considering how much the Yankees' bullpen is struggling, and their imminent need of help in the starting rotation because of Chien-Ming Wang's terrible performances so far, don't be surprised if Kei Igawa gets another chance in New York soon.

Terrible?!? Wang's E.R.A is closing in on 40! Igawa would definitly help.

First mention of Kei Igawa I have seen in months, in this morning's (August 1) NY Daily News, on Mark Seinfand's Yankees Blog Column:

"The trade deadline passed without the Yankees adding a starting pitcher... at this point, I think the Yankees would almost be better off giving Kei Igawa a try - yeah, that’s right, I said it - as the No. 5 guy. Can’t be worse than [Sergio] Mitre, right?

"Igawa is 8-4 with a 4.03 ERA in Triple-A, giving up 111 hits in 109 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 84 and walked only 28, and while he certainly isn’t going to be the answer if one of the top four goes down, why not give him a shot to be better than Mitre right now?"

It seems that the Yankees have given up on Igawa, eating his contract while he pitches for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until 2011. But I hope that's not the end for Igawa in MLB, and I've always wondered why he didn't try to come back to Japan to pitch after things turned sour in the Bronx last year.
