Mets interest in Valentine

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Mets interest in Valentine
Today's New York Times (Oct. 20) carries a short article about the New York Mets' search for a new manager in 2005. Mets' General Manager Omar Minaya had dinner with Bobby Valentine in New York and calls him a candidate for the job - though admittedly a long-shot. Apparently Bobby's contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines has a clause allowing him to leave should he be offered a managing job in MLB.

Valentine won't manage for the Mets, he's under contract with Chiba. Valentine has said there is a clause, but denied using it. Valentine will be managing Chiba next year. [See also this thread.]

Wow! Does this surprise you? Last August 7, 2004 you said Bobby V. is not going to leave NPB. Most of use knew he has an out if offered a MLB managing job of his liking. Even radion Baseball Tonight conferred in the beginning of October 2004 that he had this clause.

Bobby spoke on the phone with the New York GM two weeks ago for over an hour. These two guys go way back. I feel the diner was just some loose ends being gathered.

However, the New York Yanks could change a lot if they lose to BoSox tonight.
