Japan vs. MLB All-Stars

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Japan vs. MLB All-Stars
I can't find anywhere news about the upcoming series between the NPB and MLB stars that takes place every two years. After the 2002 series, this year we should expect to see the two teams battling again, maybe with Ichiro, Hideki, and Kazuo playing against current greats in Japan. Usually the games are played in November and I would be grateful to anybody that has news about that.

The Nichi-Bei All Star Series starts on November 5 at Tokyo Dome for three games, travels to Fukuoka, Osaka, Sapporo, and Nagoya, then returns to Tokyo Dome for the eighth and final game on November 14. Here is the full schedule:

Nov. 5 (F) 19:00 Tokyo Dome 0570-00-0056
6 (S) 18:30 Tokyo Dome
7 (S) 18:30 Tokyo Dome
9 (T) 18:30 Fukuoka Dome 0570-00-0998
10 (W) 18:30 Osaka Dome 0570-00-0998
11 (T) 18:30 Sapporo Dome 0570-00-0056
12 (F) 19:00 Nagoya Dome 0570-00-0980
14 (S) 12:00 Tokyo Dome

The above phone numbers are to reserve tickets. I don't know if you can reach the numbers from over-seas, but if so, drop the leading zero and replace it with the Japan country code of 81. You will need to be able to speak Japanese for payment instructions.

Hope this helps.

Michael - Any chance of opening the chatroom for one or more of the Japan/MLB All-Star games?

Thanks,

Sorry for the late reply. Been really busy with work.

I can set up the chat room for the games, but I don't forsee me participating much. I managed to accomplish quite a bit of "real work" in October despite the time covering the play-offs and Nippon Series, but at the cost of a lot of sleep. I've just entered the division/expansion draft results which took close to an hour. I've recieved a huge donation of data from another fan that I want to integrate. I've got a couple of articles/presentations to write. And the list goes on.

I'm sorry, but All-Star games just don't motivate me much. (I'd rather watch a regular season make up game between the last two place teams, long since eliminated.) But if some of you want to carry it, I'll set up the chat room on game days. How does that sound?

While I haven't found out when the games are going to be televised in the United States, I would suppose they will be on FOX. You can see what time the games will start at the Nichi-Bei Yakyu schedule [in Japanese]. Note the times and TV stations are Japan only.

Other than this, I don't much of anything else, as MLB.com has not released any details on what time or when the games will be televised or haven't provided much of any coverage on the Japan-MLB All-Star Series at all.

The MLB player names are in English on the NPB site. [Link]

Second, here's the times the games will be played in Eastern Time, though I'm still not sure if they will be televised or not. [Link - MLB.com]

Something that nobody's mentioned yet, it seems like there won't be any foreigners on the NPB team this year. It's kind of a let down after having watched Cabrera match "muscle to muscle" with the MLB stars two years ago. If anybody remembers, I think Cabrera blasted at least a couple of home runs in that series. I may be mistaken, but I recall another foreigner on the roster as well. (With his stats the last 5 years, it was probably Rhodes, then with the Buffs.)

There are still some 6,000 seats available for the game at Osaka Dome to be played on Wednesday, November 10 at 6:30 pm. The number to call is different than the one given by westbaystars. It is: 0570-063-005.

I've noticed something on all of the NPB players like a patch or something, but I can't find any articles explaining just exactly what it is. It looks kind of like a 3 prong pitchfork, without the handle. Here's a picture from Yahoo! Japan, with it clearly above the "T" in Giants [Link]. (You can also see the same patch blurred on Akinori Iwamura's uniform in the background.)

Anybody know?

- That's the Descente logo.

Thanks for the info. I guess I was thinking too much again, that it might be some kind of statement similar to the All-Stars wearing bracelets with colors of all 12 teams during the All-Star games to protest the merger. I noticed that the players from Seibu and Daiei don't have them though, and now that I think about it, I remember seeing a Nike logo on the Seibu uniforms.

I love Japanese baseball. I7ve been to games in Japan, and I like their style of play.

But player for player, they can't compete with Major League players. Time and time again, since the early 1900's when Major Leaguers have played in Japan against the Japanese All-Star team, the Major League teams win. This is with jet lag, unfamiliar stadiums, not knowing who they're playing.

This year the MLB team hasn't lost yet. I realize the players aren't all Americans, just a representative of Major League Baseball. I just hope the Japanese All-Star team can save face and win a couple of these last games.

I finally stayed up until 5 am my time to listen to the game, and NPB won last night 3-1. Iwakuma pitched an amazing game against Roger Clemens (possibly appearing in his last pro game ever, who knows). The MLB.com announcers cannot pronounce Japanese names to save their life (apparently "Shinjinobi Shima" was playing the game in the outfield with some dude named Ikaroshi, and some guy called "Ogasra" or maybe "Ogre-sah" or was it "Osawagar"(?) made some nice plays at first base).

I really need to find a Japanese audio feed so I stop wanting to strangle the announcers.

That said, I hope last night's win gives the NPB players the confidence to get a few more wins.

This series seems to be more one-sided than any other recent series I can remember. Is the outflow of talents to MLB having a noticable effect to the NPB All-Stars? I would think having Ichiro, Matsui, and Matsui in the line-up would've helped them quite a bit.

On the other hand, if NPB really cared about raising their level of play, they would've gotten rid of the gaijin restriction a long time ago. Despite the geographic location, Japan should be able to attract a good portion of top players in the world.

Of course, there is no reason to believe that the fans prefer seeing a higher-level competition at a price of having mostly foreign players dominate. They tried that in Taiwan (5-6 gaijin per team), and it didn't work out.

So now this Series is just one Asian country competing against the rest of the baseball world - that's hopeless.

It's too bad that some of the best players in NPB are not on the team for one reason or another. Such as triple crown winner Matsunaka, Kanemoto, Cabrera, Rhodes, etc.

Why aren't these games televised? It doesn't make much sense that two countries, with very large economies, are unable to put these games on TV? I'm a San Diego Padre Fan, and I would have liked to see Jake Peavy pitch his game. I just don't get it.

The games are on TV in Japan, but with the big time difference between Japan and the United States, it's kind of hard to air them live in North America, because it's 4:30 on the East Coast, and even earlier on the West Coast.
