Fukudome in NY Times
Wow! The U.S. sports pages are beginning to have baseball stories again, thank goodness. A nice article (with interview quotes) by Brad Lefton about new Chicago Cub Kosuke Fukudome appears in today's (Feb. 12, 2008) New York Times.

Interesting article, but why can't they ever get the pronunciation right? The article says it's KOH-skay Foo-koo-DOUGH-may. It's not skay or DOUGH or may. These are short vowels. Try "ske" as in "sketch," "do" as in "dock," and "me" as in "med."

Thanks for making it possible to see the article.
A nice thing about the WBC is that guys like Fukudome can challenge themselves in MLB and still play for Japan in the WBC, so the NPB fans can still feel he's their guy.
Not that many players have crossed over to MLB because small market GMs can't spend the money on a good free agent coming from NPB. Fukudome has played in both the Olympics and WBC, so I think he'll make the transition to American baseball quite smoothly. He's seen what the rest of the world has to offer. He seems to have a sense of humor, that helps.

It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world.
