He also became the first player in Major League history to have three 50-hit months in a season. He will need another 50-hit month if he wants to break the single season hit record of 257 set by George Sisler way back.

Imagine if he had been in the Majors when he was younger; he would have a shot at surpassing Pete Rose's 4,256 hits.

[Edited to say three, not four, 50-hit months. Nikkan Sports> has it broken up as:
    26/102 April
    50/125 May
    29/106 June
    51/118 July
    50/112 August

Now he has 209 hits with 32 games remaining. He only needs 48 more in September and 3 games in October. I think he will do it.

Ichiro already has five hits after two games in September. He needs 40 hits with 29 games left for the hits record. Ichiro now has 217 hits with a .374 batting average.

People used to be concerned of a Japanese player having the stamina to play a full MLB season because of the number of regular season games. What many don't realize is the long Japanese practices during the regular NPB season, even on off days. Also, the Fall practice after the season and rigorous Spring Training.

I'm as big a champion of Japanese baseball as anyone, but I'll have to respectfully say that a Major League season does requires more stamina than a Japanese season, due mainly to travel. Ichiro slumped badly the last two seasons in August and September, and I'm thrilled to see that he's been able to remain consistant this year.

That said, I think Ichiro is going to break Sisler's record, and I will be in attendance for at least one game when the M's visit Oakland later this month.

The amazing thing about Ichiro is that he had kind of a sub-par April. Just imagine if he had hit up to his normal standards - we might be talking about him hitting .400.

Ichiro has been locked in all summer. He is the best pure hitter I have seen in a long time. He does have the potential to bat .400.

Gambatte!

Ichiro: Five Hit Games
[ Author: Kiyoshi | Posted: Sep 23, 2004 3:24 AM | HAN Fan ]

Tuesday night, September 21st, Ichiro became the first player since 1993 to have four five-hit games in one season. Tony Gwynn (1993), Stan Musial (1948), Ty Cobb (1922), and Willie Keeler (1897) are the only other four players to have four five-hit seasons.

The five hits bring Ichiro's 2004 total to 243 hits with 11 games left to catch and pass George Sisler's season hits record total of 257 set in 1920.
