Japanese MLB Players' Uniform Numbers

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Japanese MLB Players' Uniform Numbers
I'm wondering what the reason is for every MLB player from Japan to pick their uniform number in MLB. i.e.
  • Takatsu #10, because it's always for the 2nd best player on the team and it motivates him to be the best

  • Sasaki #22, he was born on 2/22 2:22 a.m./p.m. (not sure)

  • Kazuo Matsui #25, 2+5 = 7, the number he had in NPB

  • Otsuka #16, he wanted to follow Nomo when he first came to the U.S.

The rest I don't know. If you know, please let me know. I'm just courious.

Hideki Matsui #55, I think either the owner or manager of Giants gave him that number because they expected him to be the one that break Sadaharu Oh's single season HR total. The closest he got was 50.
