How Does it feel?

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
How Does it feel?
I'm a Mets' fan from [North] America. I was wondering how it feels when Japan's finest stars (once they hit their prime) go play in the MLB? If Barry Bonds or Mike Piazza went to Japan, I'd be upset.

Most people in Japan are proud that so many can compete with what is perceived as the highest league in the world. The only people getting upset are those who previously made a fortune off of monopolistic merchandising rights.

Benifits from having so many stars go over to MLB include:
  • Recognision that NPB is a world baseball power;
  • Greater interest in Japanese baseball;
  • Renewal/rejuvenation of teams, giving younger stars a chance;
  • Forces NPB owners to upgrade their product.
Rejunenation with young new stars is the point I like the best. Veteran players are important to a team, but there has to be some new blood some time.

Your question appears to be somewhat based on the assumption that the "Doom and Gloom" and "Japan will be nothing more than a feeder system for MLB" arguements are valid. Read a bit (Google is your friend with "site:www.japanesebaseball.com" in the search box) and you'll find that I don't subscribe to such thinking.

I agree totally with your post Westbaystars-san.

I would be proud as well for an American star to do well in Japan. Someone other than Mr. Baseball, though. If you love the game of baseball, there are no national boundaries.

Actually the players that are able to come to the U.S. must put in 9 years in Japan. So they would be around 27 years old in most cases. And there are still just 12 teams in the top level of baseball in Japan, so it is still competitive to get a spot on the roster. In addition, each team can sign 3 (last time I checked) foreigners, too.

Do you get the MLB games on TV in Japan?

Yankee and Mariner games are seen on a daily basis through either regular TV or satellite TV.

I guess the Met games will be televised this year.
