H. Matsui to Have Surgery

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
H. Matsui to Have Surgery
Hideki Matsui in a game tonight dove for a ball and fractured his wrist. This will require surgery and will end his consecutive game streak of 1,674 games in Japan and and North America combined.

On a personal note, even though I am a card-carrying anti-Kyojin/Yankee hater - I hate as a baseball fan for a player (even a Yankee/Kyojin) to go down due to injury. I'd much rather see a player I don't like strike out than get injured.

That's a real shame. I knew it wasn't looking good for him last night when they showed the footage of him with a cast around his arm.

Any word of how long he's going to be out? I want him to take his time recovering, not only for his own good, but because the Yankees will suffer without him.

The New York Times said Matsui could miss the remainder of the season. General Manager Brian Cashman said he's unsure at the moment when Hideki will come back, and if it will be this year. [Full Japan Ball Article]

Supposedly three months.

Expect the Yanks to do some extra shopping in the next few weeks.

He's on the 15 day DL, but Matsui will be out for three months. It's been the top story on ESPN.

Not only will his not playing hurt the New York Yankees, his ambassadorship with young fans who get to see him during batting practice will also be missed. Many young Japanese-American fans come to Yankee Stadium for the first time and are taken back by him. I have seen him take pitcures with many groups of young fans, sign autographs, and throw balls into the stands.

He is everything you wish in a ball player. The fans respect him a lot.

IF HE WAS A CITIZEN HE COULD BE ELECTED MAYOR OF NY....TALK RADIO FANS GIVE HIM THUMBS UP AND SAID THIS IS A GOOD ROLE PLAYER...ONE FAN WONDER IF HE COULD PLAY BASKETBALL,BECAUSE THE KNICKS COULD USE HIS CHARCATER....
Like I said, he is everything you want in a ball player. Today he apologized to his team for getting hurt, "letting his team down." He also praised manager Torre for giving him the opportunity to play ever game for his streak.

If he was a citizen, he could be elected Mayor of New York. Talk Radio fans give him thumbs up and said that this is a good role player. One fan wondered if he could play basketball, because the Knicks could use his character.

Hideki Matsui said he hopes to return before the end of this year. Though, he said he doesn't want to come back and to simply under-perform because he had an injury, he wants to come back and with a determination to perform much better than before. [Full Japan Ball Story]

Good Luck and a fast return for Matsui. What a great player and ambassador for Japanese baseball players! Heck, he made me even root for the Yankees.
