Japanese-American MLB player Ishikawa called up
The SF Giants have called up 21-year old 1B prospect Travis Ishikawa from the minors. He is from Seattle and appears to be half-Japanese, half-Caucasian. You can read about him and see his picture here [MLB.com].

I apologize for posting again, but Ishikawa's call-up got me thinking about Japanese-Americans in MLB history. There have been a number of Japanese-Americans in the big leagues-Lenn Sakata, Don Wakamatsu, Mike Lum (half-Japanese), Atlee Hammaker (half-Japanese), Micheal Nakamura, and now Ishikawa. I know there was a Japanese-American pitcher who had a cup of coffee with the Cardinals in the early '80s, but his name escapes me. Are there any other Japanese-American players that have played in the major leagues?

There was this one guy on the Mets like in the '80s but I forgot his name; but he's half Japanese.

Mike Nakamura is half Aussie, might have American citizenship, but I don't know.

Hapa's rule.

Thanks for the info! I had forgotten about Onan Masaoka and Dave Roberts. Besides Kurt Suzuki, there's another player in the minors named Shane Komine from Hawaii.

Here is an interesting article on Japanese-American Baseball I just came across when using Google. I had no idea of such leagues. http://www.thediamondangle.com/archive/aug01/nisei.html

Yes, the Nisei Baseball League was a league that began in the early-1900's and used to barnstorm across the country playing against university teams and such.

I just read that his great-grandparents came to the U.S. from Japan. Not much info available on him except for baseball stats, Seattle birthplace, birthdate, and bats/throws left-handed.

One more Asian player is Hee Seop Choi, formerly with the Cubs and then Marlins; now with the Dodgers (?).

Choi is now with the Red Sox. He's with the Red Sox's AAA team Pawtucket team.

Hm, so that would make him 4th generation American. One generation more than me. Don't you think this thread is a bit - esoteric? (I'm trying to be polite. The Japanese connection is a bit of a stretch in this case.)
