Mariners sign Petagine

Mariners sign Petagine
The Seattle Mariners signed Roberto Petagine to a minor league contract. He has nothing to prove in the minors anymore.

With Tuffy Rhodes signed by the Reds, it'll be interesting to see if two of the most successful foreign NPB players can make it to the Show.

Petagine has a really good chance to make the team, even start if he has a productive and healthy spring (most M's fans want him to since they hate the signing of Carl Everett). Also, Matt Lawton will be suspended for the first ten games of the season which opens up a spot on the bench.

1. Ichiro - RF
2. Johjima - C
3. Ibanez - LF
4. Sexson - 1B
5. Beltre - 3B
6. Petagine - DH
7. Reed - CF
8. Lopez - 2B
9. Betancourt - SS

Bench
1. Rivera - C
2. Everett - DH/LF
3. Lawton - OF
4. Bloomquist - UT
5. Morse - IF/LF

Though Carl Everett is a difficult personality, and the fans may indeed not be happy with him, he can still hit. Petagine will have to be darn good to displace him.

Lawton is on a steroid suspension, I recall. We shall see how he looks after he serves his time. I'd think there would be other teams where he'd have a better shot at playing, but Seattle is where he is getting another shot. Good luck to him.

Petagine was a New York Met for a couple of seasons, seeing limited action. His batting average wasn't good, but his OBP was high.

He was a Met? What years? I thought he was with Cincy and Houston, then BoSox.

The February 26, 2006 Tacoma News Tribune has an article about Petagine's three MVPs in AAA and Japan, as well as his journey through baseball.

Petagine was a Met from 1996 to 1997. After leaving the Mets, Petagine went to the Reds, and then was sold to the Yakult Swallows.

His career numbers (majors, minors, NPB) are at the Baseball Cube. He had trouble translating his AAA dominance into MLB, eh.

And that is what is called a AAAA player.

So far Petagine is doing well in Spring training, batting .480 (12-25) with 1 HR and 4 RBI. [MLB Stats]

Petagine will indeed make the opening day roster, the Mariners said today. Mariners' manager Mike Hargrove was impressed with Petagine's powerful left-handed stroke and ability to pinch hit. [Full MLB Article]

I am happy for him as he finally gets the recognition he deserves. With Ichiro and Johjima on the opening day rosters as well, the Mariners fans in Japan are very excited about this year's lineup.

Can't wait to see Ichiro, Joh, and Peta play together at SafeCo in April.

Yah, same. I'm glad I renewed my Mariners season tickets this year after all.

On the other hand, it's still unclear what will happen to the bench after Matt Lawton's 10-day suspension is over.

Petagine hit a pinch hit solo home run in the ninth inning of the Mariners' home opener.

It was an NPB day for all of us in the Seattle area. Hehe.

Those of us in the Seattle area should get together for a Mariners' game. There is always the annual Kobe/Seattle Sister City game.

Sure, that could be fun, or the "Pacific Rim Celebration Night" or whatever it was called last year -- which happened to be Felix Hernandez's first home start, too.

Were you guys at Opening Day today? I was in the upper deck -- when Petagine came up to bat, my friends and I got up and cheered, and most of the people around us were like "Huh? Who is this guy?" Then he hit that homer, and they were all cheering too. Fun stuff.

The couple sitting next to me also asked, "How do you pronounce that?" about Johjima, and I said, "JOH-jee-mah", and they were like, "Huh. Maybe that's why we heard they call him Joe."

I don't get to go to the park too often. I'm going to the White Sox game this month, though.

The Kobe/Seattle Sister City was part of "Pacific Rim Celebration Night" last year. I sat in their cheering section last year - some people wore kimono - it was fun! I don't see either on the team promotion yet for this year.
