I hope that the Fighters or Carp can get him because they need a good experienced closer and setup man.

A few Japanese newspapers (online edition) say that the Red Sox are the front runner for getting Mori (like SpoNichi). Is this true?

And when will we know if a Major League club submitted a bid?

What I hope is, if Mori plays for the Red Sox, they should give him the reliver role, not like Denny Tomori for this year.

Tomori pitched mainly in relief in AAA Pawtucket, they tried him as a starter some with AA Portland. [Minor League Stats]

It will depend on how well Mori will pitch out of spring training with the Red Sox. If he pitches well they will give him a bullpen spot as Boston is in dire need of relievers in the highly competitive AL East. If not, he'll probably start out at AAA Pawtucket.

Nikkan Sports (in Japanese) is reporting that one MLB club has put in a bid for Mori, but isn't reporting which club put in the bid, nor for how much.

Hochi Sports has indicated that the Red Sox bid around $500,000 for him and Chunichi Sports says that Cleveland has also made an offer.

There was some indications that the Yankees might be interested, but whether they actually made a bid is unclear.

How good is Mori?

ESPN.com reports that Mori has suffered declining velocity and performance in the last two years as he dealt with minor injuries. His fastball is reported as 90 mph and straight. He relies on the splitter to get people out, but struggles with command. They also describe him as "high-kicking."

I saw stats somewhere and he had something like 60 Ks in 40+ IPs, which I'll take any day. Didn't notice his walks.

Mori commented that "Negotiations are going very well. I got very excited when I went to Tropicana Field." Mori is in Tampa Bay for talks with Devil Rays management. The Devil Rays have a January 11th deadline to sign Mori.[Full Japan Ball Article]

Nikkan Sports (in Japanese) commented that basically discussions with Tampa Bay are going smoothly and Mori is looking forward to playing with Tampa Bay.

As earlier mentioned, Tampa Bay has until January 11th to sign Mori. Mori hopes to return home on December 23rd, then begin independent training in Guam on January 3rd.
