Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Fighters Iriki Eyes Majors
Nippon Ham Fighters' pitcher Yusaku Iriki said Wednesday that he will try to pursue a career in the majors this off season. He wanted the Fighters to post him via the posting system, though like the Iguchi situation, the Fighters have decided to release him and will take the neccessary procedures at the NPB commissioner's office by Monday. [Full Story]

Iriki went 6-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 games last year. He had 122 Ks and a complete game in 2005 as well with the Fighters. [2005 Fighters Stats - Borisov's Pro Yakyu] He has a career 35-35 record with 3 saves and a 3.73 ERA. He was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in 1997 from the Honda Motor Industrial League team as their first round pick, and was traded to the Fighters in 2003.

So, Iriki is not being posted, but is released and free to sign with any major league clubs? That is interesting. Thanks for the posting.

Nikkan Sports (in Japanese) is reporting that Iriki won't accept a minor league deal. If he doesn't get a shot at the major leagues, then he'll remain with the Fighters.

The New York Mets have confirmed the signing of Iriki [MLB.com press release] and the New York Daily News quoted Ham Fighters' Manager Trey Hillman as saying Iriki "pitches with his hair on fire" and that "I'm very sorry we lost him."
