H. Matsui a Free Agent?

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
H. Matsui a Free Agent?
I just heard that Hideki Matsui is going to be a free agent after this year after only 3 years?! Does this have something to do with how he was signed from the Giants? Or is this more of an MLB forum type question and it's simply his contract expiring?

The Yankees must sign Hideki Matsui to a contract extension by November 15th or they must place him on waivers for the purpose of granting his release. If he were to clear waivers he would become a free agent. [Full Story - MLB 4 U]

Yes, it has something to do with his current contract with the Yankees. When he signed three years ago, the Yankees agree to release him after his contract expired if Hideki didn't want to re-sign with them. Without that clause, the Yankees only would need to offer Hideki arbitration to retain his rights over next three years. (That's a simplified version of MLB's arbitration process. I didn't want to bore anyone with specifics.)
