Asian Influx to NA Sports

Asian Influx to NA Sports
An anonymous reader sent me a link to "Asians Entering, Playing U.S. Professional Sports at Fast Rate" [bradenton.com]. The article doesn't only cover Japanese players heading to the Majors, but Korean female golfers and the scouting for Chinese NBA basketball prospects.

His Japanese baseball "expert" was Wayne Graczyk who didn't say anything that you all have already read here or at Garland-guru's site. I wonder if he's getting as tired as some of us about answering the same questions over and over such as,

  • Who is the next Ichiro?
  • Who are the next players going to the Majors?
  • ...

and the like. Hey, he even agrees with us that Shinjo has more influence on players going over than Ichiro.

You know, I think I would get tired of it very quickly if Kazuo Matsui came over and the media persisted in calling him "Little Matsui", whether Hideki Matsui comes over or not.

If there are any members of the press out there...Kazuo. The man's name is Kazuo...

Another milestone passed Monday when the Dodgers brought up 1B/OF Chin Feng Chen. He has been announced as the first Chinese (Taiwan) to make it to the show.

The first person of Chinese ancestry to make it to the show was Mike Lum from Hawaii. I remember getting his autograph at a game in San Francisco back in the late 70's, too bad I don't know what I did with his autograph.

Mike Lum played for the Taiyo Whales in 1982. I also got his autograph before, but he was sort of curt. He didn't look very Asian though....
