What does "Dropped for readjustment" mean next to a player's transactions status?

This is the vague reason given in the newspaper for numerous players being sent to the farm team. Possible meanings could be (in no particular order):
  • Needs a little more work on pitching, hitting, or defense.
  • Regular player returned from injury and room needed to be made on the top roster.
  • Has a minor injury (stiffness) and needs a bit of a rest.
  • Little chance of playing (bench player) so could use some time in a few farm games to keep sharp.
  • Said something that the manager didn't like and is getting punished.
  • The manager want to try another player out and this player was struggling the most or drew the short straw (often used when swapping foreign players)
  • The need for a spot start has been cleared (often when a team has an unusually long schedule - like Golden Week coming up).
  • The manager just called the player up to have a look at him, had his look, and is done.
  • A player was called up for some special occasion (like playing to a home crowd in rural matches or for his birthday).
I'm sure there are more reasons, but you should get the idea. For the most part, when the manager can't think of a good reason (or when the real reason might shake the player's confidence), this is the reason given for the demotion.
Dropped to Where?

On a related note, it isn't clear where the player is being dropped to for some people. To clear that up, he is dropped to the farm team of the same team. He is not released, put on waivers, or anything else. The player remains on the same team, just down at the farm level.

Some fantasy sports players might recognize this practice as putting someone on a "taxi squad." That's actually much how the farm team works, as an extended bench for use when needed (and not necessarily only when someone is injured).

So, "dropping" to the farm team for "readjustment" just means that the player is being taken of the main active roster but will still see action, just at a lower level.
