I only had 3 or 4 this morning, which was unusually high for a single night.
I had taken counter measures against spam-bots about a year ago (requiring the preview page) that have worked well up until now. I guess further steps are in order.
I've taken your suggestion to do away with linking to popular discussions on the top page for now. Since all of the forums are currently moderated, not a single one of those messages has gone through (which I would think would clue the spammers in that writing a bot for this site isn't going to work).
There are people who use the site who, for various reasons, don't accept browser cookies. That means that they can't login. I would rather not exclude such people. But if the bots continue, that may be the best alternative.

Yeah, I haven't received anything since then, which is a good sign. When those things come in, they'll come in like an infestation.

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

What do the other boards on the site look like as far as moderating goes? I think the only topics that got spammed were ones directly linked on the main page. In order to fight this, I highly suggest we either stop linking topics on the front page (it's cluttered enough as it is) or do away with guest posting. Getting rid of front page topics for now is probably the better alternative.
