Foreigners in KBO

Discussion in the KBO News forum
Foreigners in KBO
Here is a list I have of foreign players in KBO (as of June 2007) which was cross referenced with a friend still in Korea (avid fan of KBO).

Foreigners playing in Korea KBO.

Note 1: A proposal to increase the foreign ball player quota to 3 per team was soundly rejected by the players association.

Note 2: Players with stars (*) started the season with their respective teams but are no longer on the roster.

Wait a minute? They pay such ridiculously low salaries in the KBO? How come? Even Second Division soccer players make more in little Holland. And we have only one third the population (= market) of South-Korea.

There's a salary cap/limit regarding foreign players in basketball and baseball in South Korea. This regulation prevents the team owners from competitively bringing in expensive foreign players and shields young prospects from them.

The salaries are low compared to Major League salaries.

These guys come over here to make 300,000 which is only 80,000 less than the MLB minimum. Most of these guys were making between 9,000 and 12,000 a month in the U.S. minor leagues. It's a great opportunity to be seen by teams in Japan as well.

I agree. Most of these guys would be making a lot less money playing AAA ball in the States or Mexico, if they were offered contracts in the first place. $200-300K a season in Korea is not bad coin at all.
