Two Korean Sluggers to Train with Florida Marlins
According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins have invited the two Korean sluggers Seung-Yeop Lee and Hae-Yeong Ma to spring training with the purpose of evaluating and possibly signing one or both. The pair is expected in Florida within the next few weeks.

Lee won't be a free agent until after the 2003 season. Does anyone know Ma's status?

The other player who will accompany Lee may not be Ma (who, btw, has expressed an interest in playing in MLB before), but outfielder Shim Jong-soo, who pushed Lee this past season for the homer title. Ma is a good hitter, but my understanding is that he is an abysmal defensive player. I have no idea about Shim's defensive ability. Lee has several Gold Gloves.

The March 6, 2003 Korea Times [Link] reports that Lee Seung-yeop (Samsung Lions) and Shim Jong-soo (Hyundai Unicorns) both hit home runs in the game on Wednesday. The two KBO players were playing in a spring training game for the Florida Marlins against the New York Mets.

According to the Associated Press, Marlins' manager Jeff Torberg said "They could play here right now, both of them."
