日本代表左腕のデビューはほろ苦となった。楽天のルーキー長谷部康平投手（２２＝愛知工大）はヤクルトとの練習試合に先発。４回を無安打無失点に抑えたが、毎回の４四死球と制球を乱し「今までやってきたことができていなかった」とうなだれた。開幕ローテーション入り確実の即戦力が、初の対外試合で課題を残した。
