西武は９試合連続で３得点以下と極度の打撃不振で連敗が伸び、Ａクラスはおろかオリックスと１ゲーム差になり、最下位転落のピンチとなった。七回に１点差まで迫り、八回も無死一塁と攻めながら佐藤が送りバントを失敗。最後は和田が見逃し三振に倒れた。目標を見失ったような拙攻で競り負けた伊東監督の「勝ちを信じてやるしかない」。口調には力がなかった。
