エース離脱のアクシデントを、ヤクルトの「秋田コンビ」が救った。腰痛で先発回避した石井一の代役は、気心知れた２人で担った。鎌田が中１日登板で先発の重責を果たすと、早めの継投。３回２死満塁から石川が好リリーフし、７回まで１失点と試合をつくった。今季２勝目の石川は「カズさん（石井）がいなかったんで、中継ぎ全員でつなぐ気持ちでいこうと言い合ってました」。投手陣でつかんだ勝利を強調すれば、鎌田は「石川に感謝です」と秋田で同じ中学の後輩を頼もしそうに見つめた。
