ヤクルトは阪神の強力なリリーフ陣を意識して早めに勝負をかけた。０−３の五回に早々と石井一をあきらめて代打をコール。その真中の適時打などで同点としたが、その後は加点できず１点差に泣いた。３連敗の古田監督は「救援が手ごわいので、早い段階で攻めるのが共通意識。点を取れたのになぁ…」とガックリ。六、七回を封じられた久保田には「夏場にあんだけ投げられるのは信じられない」と脱帽気味だった。
