セ２強がついに入れ替わった。１５日、巨人は広島１２回戦（東京ドーム）で２－４の逆転負け。３カード連続で負け越し、５月２８日から守っていた首位から転落した。自己最多の１１勝目を狙った高橋尚が７回に同点ソロを浴び、９回には豊田－林が乱れて決勝点を許した。７回の好機で二岡に代打小関を送るなどベンチの不可解な選手起用もあった。交流戦後は４勝１０敗となった。中日はエース川上憲伸投手（３２）が７回３失点と力投。８勝目で通算９９勝とし、１００勝に王手をかけた。中日は４９日ぶりに首位に返り咲いた。
