小さなミスが大きなミスを呼び、そして致命傷のミスへとつながった。１点差の８回表１死、なんでもない三ゴロを小笠原がファンブル。緊迫した投手戦はこのミスから崩れた。続く右打者の栗原に、左腕山口がリードを広げられる痛恨のタイムリー二塁打を浴びた。四球の後、西村に交代したが、右翼手ホリンズの三塁への悪送球や中堅鈴木尚が目測を誤って適時打にするなど「守乱」。最後は西村が倉に３ランを浴び一気に試合が決まった。
