「御前試合」でも、西武涌井にとっては通過点だった。７回１失点でリーグトップのソフトバンク杉内に並ぶ９勝目。最後を締めた小野寺にウイニングボールを示されたが、涌井は「和田さんが誕生日ですから」と首を振って通り過ぎた。目標だった前半戦での２ケタ勝利に王手。それでも「チームの連勝を止めなかったのが自分の勝ちより大きい」と、チームの５連勝と４位タイ浮上を喜んだ。
