オリックスのアレンが５－５で迎えたヤクルト戦の延長１０回、先頭打者で左翼へ劇的サヨナラ弾を決めた。初打席から８５打席目に出た来日１号で、今季初の５点差大逆転を完結させた。チームメートにもみくちゃにされ、解放された時には額の右に赤い大きなタンコブができていた。「畜生！ タフィーにやられちゃったよ」。ローズにボコボコにされても、こんな痛みなら大歓迎だ。「最高だ。このチームで初めて大事な仕事ができたよ」。サヨナラ弾は３２年の人生で初体験だった。
