西武涌井には「普通」が１番だった。交流戦開幕投手に指名され、チームは３連敗中。目に見えぬプレッシャーに加えて「交流戦の初戦なんで、多少慎重にいった」という変化がいつものリズムを狂わせた。１回３四球で２死満塁のピンチ。内川をシュートで遊飛に仕留めて難を逃れたが、ベンチに戻って「今までやってきた通りに投げればいいんだ」という周囲の言葉で自分を取り戻した。
