４連敗中のチームの危機を救ったのは西武のルーキー岸孝之投手（２２＝東北学院大）だった。５回１／３を投げ６安打３失点と粘って４勝目を手に入れた。最速１４４キロと１１０キロ台の落差あるカーブを有効に使い分けた。今年のルーキーでは巨人金刃と並び、パ・リーグ新人の勝ち頭。中日浅尾拓也（２２＝日本福祉大）広島青木高広(２５＝日産自動車）と新人４投手が勝利投手になる「ルーキーナイト」で、パ組では岸が存在感をアピールした。
