まさかの連続だった。開幕から５連勝の巨人高橋尚に“不運”が襲いかかった。０－０で迎えた６回表１死、飯原の右中間に舞い上がった打球を、猛然と突っ込んできた鈴木尚が後逸し、三塁打に。続くガイエルの打球は中前にポトリと落ちるタイムリーとなった。し烈な投手戦で痛すぎる失点が刻まれてしまった。勝てば３６年秋に沢村が記録して以来、７１年ぶりチーム史上２人目のシーズン初登板から６戦６勝だったが、その快挙は崩れてしまった。
