大垣日大（岐阜）が希望枠の出場校で初めて４強に進出した。初回に２番平野真也（２年）の先制タイムリー三塁打など積極的な攻撃が目立ち、試合の主導権を握った。投げても先発の森田貴之（３年）が１失点完投。初出場ながら勢いに乗り、５季連続出場の関西（岡山）を圧倒した。名将阪口慶三監督（６２）は「森田は１００点満点の内容。しっかり抱きしめてやりたい。関西の方が戦力は上だが、初回に先制し、チーム全員が勇気づけられた」と大喜びだった。
