オリックスは７年ぶりの開幕連勝を逃した。相手先発の和田の前に、５回終了時まで無安打。６回に前田のチーム初安打から１死一、三塁の反撃機をつかんだが、ラロッカ、ローズが凡退。７回１死一、三塁も生かせなかった。和田には昨年から４連敗。テリー・コリンズ監督（５７）は「次？ 今日みたいな投球をしないことを願うしかない」と振り返った。
