初出場の大牟田が開幕戦でホロ苦デビューを飾った。８回までは２点差の接戦だったが、９回にフライを落球するなどミスが続き４失策で５点を失った。打っては１３三振を奪われわずか４安打。二塁を踏むことさえできなかった。「野球はミスが出た方が負ける。すべてが夏に向けての課題になりました」と松嶋峰一監督（６３）は初めての甲子園での戦いぶりを振り返った。
