From Japan comes the stuff of legends

There was a morning recently when every pitching coach in America sought to burn all copies of the New York Times. The story wasn't new - in fact, many knew of this legendary performance in Japan - but in a marvelous piece by Times writer Jack Curry, it all came to life.

Hide your panic buttons, everyone: As a 17-year-old kid, Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 535 pitches over the last four days of the Koshien, Japan's national high-school tournament, before crowds of some 55,000 and a national-TV audience. He threw 250 pitches in a 17-inning win, came back the following day to save a semifinal victory after starting the game in the outfield, then pitched a no-hitter - to clinch the title - the day after that.
