MARTY BROWN'S TEAM sputtered out of the gate last season and Hiroshima could never quite dig itself out of the hole, finishing in fifth place with a 62-79-5 record. The Carp have brought in knuckleballer Jared Fernandez this year and Brown is hoping that some of his younger players can step up and complement veteran stars like pitchers Hiroki Kuroda and Shinji Sasaoka and offensive stalwarts Tomonori Maeda, Takahiro Arai and Shigenobu Shima.
