Sayonara Home Run!

Sayonara Home Run!
Yesterday I bought a new book that is a must for all yakyu fans. It is called "Sayonara Home Run! The Art of the Japanese Baseball Card," by John Gall and Gary Engel. The publisher is Chronicle Books of San Francisco and it retails for US$ 18.95.

"Sayonara Home Run" is a beautiful picture book of photos of Japanese baseball cards, menko of all shapes and sizes, candy, gum and tobacco cards, cardboard boxes, etc. Basically from the period 1930 - 1960. Naturally there are a lot of rare gaijin cards included in the photos (Lefty O'Doul, Babe Ruth, etc.). In the forward, Robert Fitts is given credit for providing much of the material reproduced. There is informed commentary along with the illustrations. A wonderful book to leaf through that gives a face to the enthusiasm that generations of Japanese have felt for the game. Heartily recommended!
About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
