Foundation of Japanese Baseball?
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew the name of the person who founded baseball in Japan? I believe that it was brought over to Japan from the US, but I would like to know who it was who did so. If anyone has any information, please e-mail it to me at bkst_grl@yahoo.com Thank you.

I haven't been able to find my copy for a while now, but you'll want to go to your nearby library and check out You Gotta Have Wa by Robert Whiting. He has a whole section dedicated to the history of baseball in there.

Also by Whiting is Chrysanthemum and the Bat. One reader, many years ago, said that this book is "more of a history than 'Wa'."

Both books and a few more you might be interested in for research are listed here.

Hope this helps.

The first baseball game in Japan was organized by Albert Bates, an American professor at Kaitaku. The date was 1873.

If one accepts Robert Whiting's research in "You Gotta Have Wa", then an American named Horace Wilson, a teacher at Kaisei Gakko, introduced baseball early in the Meiji era. Albert Bates of Kaitaku University staged the first actual game in 1873. The first team to be formed was Shimbashi Athletic Club (1878) a group of railway workers organized by Hiroshi Hiraoka.
