Well, let's look at 2003 catching stats:
+--------------+------+------+-------+-----+-----+----+----+------+------+
| Name | Team | Part | Games | Att | OSB | CS | PO | CS% | Rank |
+--------------+------+------+-------+-----+-----+----+----+------+------+
| Furuta | YS | 1 | 139 | 71 | 44 | 27 | 2 | .380 | 1 |
| Abe | YG | 1 | 93 | 61 | 39 | 22 | 0 | .361 | 2 |
| Yano | HT | 1 | 123 | 100 | 65 | 35 | 3 | .250 | 3 |
| Ishihara | HC | 1 | 115 | 69 | 47 | 22 | 2 | .319 | 4 |
| Tanishige | CD | 1 | 110 | 48 | 33 | 15 | 3 | .313 | 5 |
| Nakamura | YBS | 1 | 79 | 56 | 42 | 14 | 0 | .250 | 6 |
+--------------+------+------+-------+-----+-----+----+----+------+------+
| Johjima | FDH | 1 | 140 | 83 | 47 | 35 | 5 | .427 | 1 |
| Matoyama | OKB | 1 | 94 | 69 | 40 | 29 | 1 | .420 | 2 |
| Hosokawa | SL | 1 | 92 | 36 | 24 | 12 | 2 | .333 | 3 |
| M. Shimizu | CLM | 1 | 91 | 47 | 33 | 14 | 0 | .298 | 4 |
| Hidaka | OBW | 1 | 108 | 110 | 78 | 33 | 2 | .297 | 5 |
| Fujii | OKB | 1 | 72 | 57 | 41 | 16 | 1 | .281 | 6 |
| S. Takahashi | NHF | 1 | 105 | 84 | 63 | 21 | 0 | .250 | 7 |
| Itoh | SL | 1 | 73 | 40 | 31 | 9 | 0 | .225 | 8 |
+--------------+------+------+-------+-----+-----+----+----+------+------+
Johjima has been the top catcher in the Pacific League for the past few seasons. There's no doubt about that.

Kintetsu and Seibu both had a lot of platooning going on in the catcher's spot. Itoh retired and will be Seibu's manager in 2004, so he can be left off the "current" list.

The Giants' Abe is certainly up and coming. Hanshin's Yano had a career year last year. Tanishige had a very bad year after being the top Central League catcher the previous two years.
