To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to inquire about how to contact specific leagues (preferably in English). I am an American Professional Umpire who works at the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. I am looking into the umpiring possibilities that exist in the leagues for American umpires. Any help that you might be able to give me would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and anticipated consideration.

Sincerely,

Brent Rice

Well, before you think about the Japanese league - the last American umpire (I believe) Mike DiMuro did NOT have it well in Japan in 1997 and left before the season was over. Japan has a much smaller strike zone (especially on the corners) and a fairly wide strike call by DiMuro started a fight between the Dragons' Taiho (can't think of his given name) and the Dragons' manager Hoshino. Taiho punched DiMuro and Hoshino shoved Taiho into DiMuro.

This is the most extreme, but umpires in Japan generally get a little more abuse than in the States (or they did when I was last there). On the other hand, neither Taiho nor Hoshino are in baseball anymore, so perhaps it's safer?

I don't want to sound discouraging, just want to let you know you might not get the same respect, and if you did make it, it'd be quite the accomplishment.

Thank you for the response. My question is whether anyone may be able to provide me contact information for someone who makes the decisions in this area. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Brent Rice

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. This isn't easy information to find. The best I could come up with is that the respective leagues' commissioners' offices are in charge of their umpires. I don't know how far you'll get with only English, but here are the addresses:

Pacific League Commissioner
Asahi Building 9F
6-6-7 Ginza
Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0061

Central League Commissioner
Asahi Building 3F
6-6-7 Ginza
Chuo-ku, Tokyo 104-0061

I hope this helps. Gambatte kudasai.
