Based on his stats, it would seem Scott McClain is this decade's Bernardo Brito/Hensley Meulens (who coincidentally is his hitting coach at Fresno). Tremendous minor league slugger, not so much in the majors.

Alex Ochoa must have put in a good word for Scott. The two were teammates on the Orioles' AA Bowie Baysox in 1994. Scott must really love the game to have played as many years in AAA as he has. I've got a feeling he'd approach Japanese ball with the right attitude and would contribute the same way the Ochoa-constrictor did. It also helps that Scott has already been in Japan and is open to going back. He won't suffer through that "culture shock" phase.

McClain has substantial Japanese League experience having played for Seibu from 2001-2004. He hit for a lot of power (39 HRs in 2001, and 26 HRs in 2003), but his career Japanese batting average was only .233 and he struck out an awful lot. He's been a force in the AAA Pacific Coast League the last four seasons, hitting a combined 118 HRs and a career best .300 last year at Fresno. He's 37 this year, which is pretty old, but he's off to another solid start this year at Fresno and should give the Carp one or two good seasons before time catches up with him.

Well, they need to do something. Despite many people picking the Carp to finally finish in A-class this year, the offense has been terrible. Just managed 3 runs in 3 games against Hanshin this weekend (and 2 of them helped by a balk call!).
By the way, what's wrong with Kurihara? He didn't play all weekend.

Meulens slugged only .465 in the minor leagues and never hit 30 homers in the minors. You're giving him too much credit for work on the farm. His major league totals are not drastically out of line with his MiLB performance.

McClain has signed [BreitBart.com] with the Carp for 20M yen (about $207,000).
