Nomo Coming Back to Japan?

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
Nomo Coming Back to Japan?
After the Kansas City Royals released Nomo, I've been hearing some speculation from the local news here that he might be coming back to Japan to play, possibly with Rakuten. I saw a local sports clip on the morning TV news report the rumor, and the following Sankei Sports clip (in Japanese) talks about the rumor with Rakuten manager Mr. Nomura saying it's probably not possible to get Nomo. Thoughts?

Mr. Nomura also talks about Orix having first dibs for talks with Nomo, but I'm not exactly sure why. Would that be because the last club he was with when he left Japan was Kintetsu, now Orix?

I'm not one to believe rumors from sports papers, but seeing as how Nomo still has the desire to pitch, maybe he might just accept that he's no longer wanted in MLB, and come back to Japan?

Sources seemed more solid this time around, compared to when Yokohama was rumored to be his destination. But with both Nomuras and Rakuten's front office saying no, ... Then again, Nomo himself is in Japan right now, away from his LA home, so mixed messages.

I would be highly surprised to ever see Nomo play in NPB again, but these rumors come up again every time it looks like he won't be able to find work anymore in the Bigs.

I would like to see him back in NPB, it's where he should finish his career. And although he might have left a bad taste when he first left to join the Dodgers; as a BayStars fan I hoped for the rumors of him joining the Yokohama team to be true. I think he still has a few good years left in him and can help any team in NPB that needs a boost in the starting rotation (BayStars) or bullpen (BayStars). I hope someone picks him up (BayStars).

He can go hang out with Iriki (BayStars).

I would give him a year maximum before he is finished. He could even finish sooner (a la Sasaki). The main problem with Nomo would, I think, be the cost. Yokohama were badly burned with Sasaki and will be cautious. Rakuten are known for keeping tight control of their spending. So as to who signs him, I don't know.

Surely he'll be the star pitcher for this team!

I would like my favorite player of all time (Nomo) to play for my favorite team of all time (Hanshin Tigers), but I think it will be hard.

I will be really happy if Nomo continues to pitch for any team he goes to. This guy is a legend!

It's highly unlikely Nomo will return to any NPB team in my eyes after the burned bridges that led to Nomo retiring and departing to MLB. Also, I find it highly unlikely that Nomo will be forgiven for this burning of bridge either, which in my belief will keep him from playing for a NPB team in the future.

Furthermore, at this part of Nomo's career, it's hard to see how he be any help to any professional team, and it will be hard for any team executive to prove that Nomo can help a NPB team.
