Kroon Walks in a Tiger Winning Run

Kroon Walks in a Tiger Winning Run
In the Giants/Tigers game a couple of days ago, with the bases loaded and a 3-2 count, Kroon walked in a run to give the Tigers the win.

I heard some talk that Kroon was upset with the call and it looked like a strike on the replay.

I didn't see it - does anyone have any details? Was it a good call?

I watched the ball on TV. The ball was out-course. I think it was a good call. Though the judgment is a bit difficult, umpires always have to call either a strike or ball. Nothing else.

He just felt sorry for his teammates, so I think he performed like that.

It was a really, really, really close call. I saw the replay on the news - the ball goes across the plate on the lower outside corner, Kroon starts pumping his fist like he's struck out Arai... and the umpire calls it a ball and everyone goes crazy. The Tigers are crazy because they've won, and Kroon goes crazy because he's about to eat the umpire.

Found Youtube footage of the entire at-bat, 6+ minutes long. The final pitch is around the 5:40 mark. You can see for yourself.

Thanks for the link Deanna.

And good post Mijow. Yes, the Giants have gotten a lot of close calls their way for years.

Heh, heh.

I didn't see the pitch, but I saw a replay of his tantrum afterwards which was quite a sight.

He can complain all he likes about that call but he'd done a pretty poor job that inning up until that point. So perhaps he should be looking at his own failings before those of the umpires and acting like a spoilt child. He simply wasn't up to the task that day.

Either way, yet another reason to dislike both him and his team.

Well I watched the replay and he doesn't do anything crazy. Just gets mad and yells at the umpire for a few seconds like anyone else would. Some people might argue that pitch is too close to call a ball and cause the Tigers to win. Kind of like how it is looked down upon to call a foul in basketball with only seconds left. But it was a ball, so good call.

Yes, I think so, too. It was a ball for sure. Arai has a good batting eye.

Well I thought it could have gone either way. Kroon always shows displeasure when calls don't go his way, so perhaps that influenced the ump just a touch. Kroon was all over the place. He hit Yano in the head and could have been ejected. This time the ump certainly wasn't going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Fair? probably not. But that's the way it goes. (And it makes up for some of those other close calls the Giants have gotten in their favor over the years.)

I've seen many of those called strikes - it's the umpire's judgment, but that one looked like a ball. After watching Kroon since he was with the BayStars, he does throw a lot of balls. Everyone raves about his fastball, but many times it works only if the batter swings. As Mijow said, he was all over the place in that inning.

- He hit Yano in the head

Did it actually hit Yano? I missed the game and only caught the newsreel. I couldn't tell if it hit him or just came very close.

Either way, what a scary experience.
