Following the completion of his MLB playing career, Don Zimmer spent 1966 with the old Toei Flyers, hitting .182 with 9 home runs in 87 games.

Zimmer has a good deal to say about his Japanese experiences of '66 (and the contrast to 1990, when he returned briefly with an All-Star team) in his recently-published autobiography.
His season was shortened by yet another of the injuries to which he was prone. Not liking Japanese food, he found it difficult to get enough to eat. Thinking to beat culture shock by exercising one of his Stateside habits, he went to the racetrack, only to discover that Japanese thoroughbreds, as he put it, run "backwards" (meaning clockwise). This just emphasized the differentness of Japanese society, and Zimmer never again played the ponies that year.

Contrast Zimmer's recollections of Japan with Rich "Goose" Gossage's autobiography "Goose on The Loose." Gossage and his family enjoyed Fukuoka and Japanese food. His book even mentions that his wife returned for a bike tour after Goose's playing days in Japan.

Does anyone have any background info or stories on Don Zimmer's time in Japan? Any background info or where to find it would be very helpful.
