Quality Starts

Quality Starts
Over in this thread, Christopher (jokingly) asked for some BayStar starters for the Tigers. Well, I wasn't so sure that anyone other that Miura was going to improve the Tigers all that much, so I went in search of a starter's measurement tool. The first thing that came to mind was Quality Starts [Wikipedia], defined as throwing at least 6 innings while giving up 3 or less runs. That sounds good. So lets compare the Yokohama starters to Hanshin starters at the All-Star break, shall we?

Yokohama
Daisuke Miura 11 quality starts / 16 starts
Hayato Terahara 11/15
Yoshihiro Doi 6/13
Kimiyasu Kudoh 5/10
Takeharu Katoh 2/9
Yuuji Yoshimi 2/8
Takeo Kawamura 0/5
Shun Yamaguchi 0/1
Naoki Mitsuhashi 0/1

Hanshin
Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi 6 quality starts / 15 starts
Esteban Yan 5/15
Shinobu Fukuhara 2/12
Ryan Vogelsong 5/9
Naohisa Sugiyama 3/7
Keiji Uezono 2/6
Atsushi Nohmi 2/5
Tatsuya Kojima 2/5
Yasuhiro Nakamura 1/3
Ryuji Wakatake 0/2
Darwin Cubillan 0/1
Minoru Iwata 0/1

Hmmm. We've got 3 pitchers with at least half quality starts, you've got 1. That is rather interesting. I think I'll dive into this kind of data a little farther when I have more time.

Is anyone interested in this for other teams? Other details (i.e. ERA for season and QS)?

Hmmm. No response. So either nobody is interested or nobody has any complaints. I'll view it as no complaints and produce Quality Stars for all the teams for comparison.

I think it's clear from these results that it's not the BayStars that one wants to pick starting pitchers from. But what's with the Swallows? That many quality starts and unable to win? Oh, yea. Batting problems.

I think that this does show that the Tigers have a serious problem on their hands, though. Maybe the Tiger naysayers have a point.

I knew the the Pacific League was pitching rich, but 62% quality starts for the Hawks? And the Fighters' Takeda 7 for 7? Why haven't I heard more about Takeda than Darvish?

I'd always thought that with the designated hitter in the Pacific League that the batting would be better. But in recent years I've come to think that it's the pitchers that benefit most, mainly due to being able to stay in games that they'd be pinch hit for in the Central League.

The Takeda boys are a couple of the most underrated pitchers in all of Japan. All they do is get outs.

Totally agree with that, they get their jobs done almost every time they are needed. Maybe you can say they just don't have enough star power/charisma in them for people to talk much about them.

And actually Darvish would've had a few more QS if he wouldn't lose control all of a sudden in games. Plus he strikes out like 10 batters a game and pitches 9 innings in consecutive starts. Combined with his publicity from high school and his looks, that's where all the media came from.

Yakult's pretty surprising though, as Westbay-san said it already. Never knew Ishii-Hisa had so many QS. Too bad they've got no offense to go along with it. It's pretty scary to see your lead-off man get walked intentionally so many times in the season and then watch your no. 2 batter not coming up with hits when they need one.

These are very interesting. I know that Darvish seems to have a big problem with the early stages, but once over that settles down. Yakult I think run out of pitching when they get to the relief stage.

This is bang on the money. Our batting hasn't been poor at all relative to the other CL sides (aside from the opening month or so).

It's just taken us a while to find the right blend coming out of the bullpen (and we still have some way to go). Relief pitchers like Igarashi and especially Ishii Horotoshi are hard to replace.

I think the other thing about the Takedas is that they came out of the Industrial Leagues. It seems like Industrial League players automatically have to work a lot harder in order to get recognition and popularity.

Of course the high school kids are the ones who come to NPB with the big hype. College players only get hype when they're top picks with distinguished college careers. Toritani is a good example of this.

Well, part of the deal with Masaru Takeda is that he goes in and out of the bullpen and the rotation depending on what the team needs. I think they put him in the rotation when Tomoya Yagi was put on the DL with shoulder problems in mid-May.

And if you think about it, that makes Takeda even cooler, because he's so versatile. But it's also why he sort of snuck in under the radar, because a lot of people forget about him being a starter. Either that, or they still confuse him with Hisashi.

Anyway, the thing that jumped out at me immediately from the PL list was that when I said a few weeks ago that I believed Lotte and SoftBank to have three "top two" pitchers in Naruse/Watanabe/Kobayashi and Sugiuchi/Wada/Arakaki, I wasn't entirely crazy in saying so. Though given Arakaki's penchant for wild pitches (22 so far this year? yikes!) I'm beginning to wonder about him.

You complement Takeda on his ability and then give Nippon Ham no credit for their top three starters. That does not make sense to me. Yes, Chiba and SoftBank do have very good top three starters but, Nippon Ham's is just as good. Darvish/Glynn/Takeda is a very solid top three, and don't forget they are in first place right now. They are carrying that team with their pitching. If those three had the offense of Chiba or SoftBank behind them there is no telling how big their lead in the PL would be.

I am not debating the fact that SoftBank and Chiba have solid starters, I am just saying maybe we should give these three some credit, too.

Can't help but noticing that Tateyama's having some bad luck. He leads the team in QS, and only has a 2.70 ERA after July 24th. And yet he has a record of 3-6.

Poor guy's not getting any help from his offense.

I think it's really funny that someone's telling me I need to talk more about how awesome the Fighters are. Usually people tell me to shut up about them already.

Anyway, I guess you weren't around for the thread I was referring to. I wasn't saying here that the Fighters aren't the most awesome team ever with the best pitchers ever (look, I haven't even made fun of Satoru Kanemura in several weeks! though after his last "start" I really should), I was just pointing out that Naruse really is as legit a TOR as predicted.

And uh, not to start punching walls again, but if they had Ogasawara's .927 OPS bat still instead of the Mendoza-diving gaijin of the month, there's no telling how big their lead in the PL would be. But I'm not bitter. Really.

This is a very interesting statistic. And it really surprises me that it is rarely mentioned in this country. This would be a great stat to post among the league leaders. It's a tell tale statistic. It can show how some pitchers may have a poor or just average win/loss record, but he gives quality starts night in and night out to let their teams win games.

On the flip side, guys on really good teams may have a poor quality start percentage but can still have nice records.
