Arakaki: 14 Ks

Discussion in the Records and Milestones forum
Arakaki: 14 Ks
Daiei's rookie right hander, Nagisa Arakaki, showed great form on Sunday afternoon (June 8) as he threw a three-hit shutout against the Nippon Ham Fighters at Tokyo Dome. Arakaki struck out 14 Fighters on 125 pitches, including eight of the nine starting members for Nippon Ham. (Catcher and #9 batter Katsuhiko Yamada was the had two of the Fighting Ham's three base hits and grounded out to short.) What's more, Arakaki completed this feat without giving up a single walk (although he did hit a batter), nor allowing a single opponent to reach second base.

14 strike outs is the most for any pitcher so far this season, surpassing 13 by the likes of Matsuzaka, Irabu, Uehara, and Kudoh. The last rookie player to strike out 14 in a game was Seibu's Matsuzaka who did so on September 2, 1999.

Nikkan Sports notes that there has never been a single pitcher strike out all nine starting players on the opposing team. Something to shoot for?

I was in Tokyo this weekend and saw the game at the Tokyo Dome. Since I do not understand or read Japanese, I did not realize Arakaki's achievement until I read about it in this forum.

After the game there was a short ceremony honoring two players from the Hawks. What was that about?
