Spring Training Video and Pictures
With Spring Training Camps officially underway for all teams as of Feb. 1, some of the teams have begun updating their daily camp sessions over the Internet free of charge. Here are links to the teams that have video or pictures updated regularly, along with instructions on how to view them, for those of you that can't read Japanese.

Chunichi Dragons: Only pictures and a report are offered from the Dragons Official home page. If you can't read the Japanese font, then find the link towards the top of the page that has "2005" in it, and towards the end of the link in parenthesis you should see (2/1), (2/2), etc. for the daily reports. Just click on the link, and then click on the day you want to see, by finding the ('05.2.*) (YY/M/D) format at the end of the link.

Hiroshima Carp: Open up this link from the Carp official home page, and click on the first link under the "News-Headline" title. A new window will pop up, with a picture of the current conditions, and below the picture will be the Real Media logo. Click on that to connect and watch the Carp practice. (Must have Real Player installed to view.)
  • The server seems to be busy most of the time, either from a small amount of connections available, or popularity. You can see an English message on the current conditions of the connection at the bottom of the window. On the first day of the video offering, the page had close to 50,000 hits. I still haven't been able to get a connection yet.
  • Viewing times are from 10:00 - 16:00 Japan Time (17:00 - 23:00 PST US).
  • There is also a calender beneath the video window, and if you don't see a number for the day of the month, that means the broadcast won't be running that day.
Softbank Hawks: Softbank has set up a special Spring Training Report, where they upload videos daily* of different training sessions. The videos are available in streaming format for Windows Media Player, at 100k or 300k, towards the bottom of the page.
(* When there is no camp session the previous day, there will be no update.)

Nippon Ham Fighters: Nippon Ham is doing daily* updates to the team home page with video footage and pictures. Once you open up the link you should see a different picture daily of the Spring Training camp activities. Beneath the picture should be a little orange camcorder icon with Japanese writing next to it ("camp video can be found here"). Click on this button, and it will take you to the most current report, with video footage below the lead story, and pictures towards the bottom of the page.
(* When there is no camp session the previous day, there will be no update)

Chiba Lotte Marines: Reports and pictures can be found on the Spring Training section from the Official Home Page. The links are indexed by date, in (MM/DD) format.

If anybody else has relevant information on regularly updated pictures or video clips from Spring Training camps, please post the information here.

Tokyo Giants: The Giants are going to begin camp reports from Feb. 11, on the Giants Miyazaki Web Page. The reports will debut with live webcasts of player interviews for 5 hours a day, on Feb. 11, 12, and 13. Broadcast times are from 10:00 - 15:00 Japan Time (17:00 - 22:00 PST US). [The details on how to view the webcast aren't up as of yet, and I will be out of town for most of the three day weekend. Could somebody else post instructions for non-Japanese readers when they are available?]

The players will be accepting interview questions from fans who write in, with the deadline for entries set for Feb. 10 (Japan time). I don't know if they will be accepting English questions, but if you're a Giants' fan, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try, as long as the questions aren't too complicated. To submit a question for the players, click on the blue button towards the bottom right corner of the link above.

After the webcast interviews are finished, from the same link above beginning from Feb. 14, there will be a camp digest available until the end of March. (No details as of yet as to update frequency or media available for viewing, but I'm hoping they at least post practice pictures.)

Interviews are up on the above mentioned Miyazaki page. Just scroll down to photos of players/coaches and click one of the two white bars below the photo. The first white bar (button) is for broadband (512k bps), the second is for narrow band (64k bps).

While, these "require" a Microsoft plug-in, I was able to watch a couple of them with the Open Source VLC (Video Lan Client) media player by looking at the source code for the media page and copying the media content URL to the "Open URL" dialog. Still, one interview stopped after the first frame of video, and others kept loading, but not displaying. Either the media files are deliberately impared by Microsoft to not work with other media players or the streaming server is over-loaded. Despite Bill Gates' recent "commitment to interoperability" statement, Microsoft formats remain the worst in the world in regards to interoperating with other systems.

Nonetheless, if you've paid your Microsoft Tax, older video footage is available below the initial special interviews by clicking on the bandwidth number next to each clip's thumbnail. Much of what I've seen in this section just looks like short segments of film with no commentary.
