This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.
It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.

By way of comparison, Lew Ford, the player Mench will be replacing for Hanshin, was 31 in 2008 and had a terrible year. I don't think it was so much that he couldn't adjust to the Japanese game, as it was that his skills had deteriorated with age. By crunching the numbers, Bill James showed that major league players as a group peak at age 27. Lew Ford and Kevin Mench are perfect examples. Ford had his best major league season by far in 2004, the year he was 27, with an .827 OPS. In 2005, his OPS was .715, and in 2006 and 2007 his major league OPS was below .700 and his AAA OPS was about .750.
The upshot is that Kevin Mench might have one good year left, but I wouldn't count on it. He's a better player than Lew Ford, but the trend in his American career is down, down, down.
