Chiba Signs W. Abreu
The Chiba Lotte Marines have signed pitcher Winston Abreu [Baseball-Reference] to a one year contract worth 46 million (4,600-man) yen. Abreu went 0-1 with a 5.93 ERA in 26 games with the Washington Nationals last year.

He has a career 0-1 record with a 6.81 ERA in 33 games in a two year career with the Orioles and Nationals. Abreu went 3-0 with 5 SVs and a 1.20 ERA in 34 games with AAA Columbus this year.

Good sign to fill Yabuta's spot, maybe even close? Abreu had an outstanding season in Columbus.

I would say probably to fill Yabuta's spot. I think Brian Sikorski would probably close games out for Chiba Lotte. He had some experience closing out games with the Yomiuri Giants.

My money is on Bobby V. using Sikorski almost entirely in a set-up role in 2008. Sikorski has never shown the ability/temperament necessary for a closer. Bobby V. has a knack for putting his players in situations that help them be successful and, if Sikorski is used as the closer, it will be by default.
