Iwase To Remain With Chunichi

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Iwase To Remain With Chunichi
Closer Hitoki Iwase will remain with the Dragons next year. Iwase said:
I've wanted to continue my playing career in the place where I grew up. I've made up my mind after I first spoke with the front office.
Iwase went 2-4 with 43 saves and a 2.44 ERA in 61 games for the NPB champion Chunichi Dragons.

That's pretty great news for NPB. I think with those career numbers, you'd have to be foolish to think Iwase is chickening out of pursuing the majors. Hopefully this move will encourage other top level NPB players to stay in Japan.

I agree, this is great news for NPB, as in Iwase is one of NPB's two best closers alongside Kyuji Fujikawa.

However, I'm wondering that the prospect of playing in next year's Olympic Games had anything to do with him staying? Seeing as if he went the major league route this off season, any MLB team wouldn't allow him to participate in the Olympics, as he would be on a 25-man roster.

Chunichi offered Iwase two deals: a one year deal worth 430 million yen or a four year deal worth 420 million yen. Anyone have any details on what contract Iwase chose?

If he accepted the one year deal, I figure he'll try again at MLB after 2008. If he accepted the four year deal I figure he's committed to NPB.

Did Iwase sign the one year contract or four year contract they offered him?
