Chunichi's Kawai To Retire
Chunichi Dragons infielder, Masahiro Kawai [Player Page], has announced he will retire at the end of the season [Japan Ball]. He will join Chunichi's coaching staff next year, where he will serve as a fielding and base-running coach.

Kawai batted .266 with 43 HRs and 322 RBI over a 21 year career (1984-2006). Also, Kawai is the all-time world leader in sacrifice bunts with 532, as he broke former Hall of Famer Eddie Collins' record of 512.

Aww. Sad, but I suppose it's time. I thought it was a bad sign when he wasn't with the ichi-gun in the last stage of the race. They seem to have used Narahara in a lot of situations where last year they used Kawai, and Narahara can run, so he could come in as a pinch-runner and then play third, while Kawai would only be the sure-fire bunter and then play third.
