Arizona's Andy Green Interested in NPB

Arizona's Andy Green Interested in NPB
Arizona's Andy Green [Baseball Reference] has asked the Diamondbacks to sell his contract [MLB.com] to a NPB team.

Green met with Diamondbacks GM, Josh Byrnes, Friday to discuss the possibility of being posted to Japan. Right now, Green is a part of the Arizona 40-man roster, and any team would have to pay compensation for Green's services to Arizona.

Last year, the Nippon Ham Fighters were interested in Green [Related Thread]. However, Green said he wasn't ready to make a jump to Japan at that time, as he set his sights on making the Arizona 25-man roster out of spring training, which he finally did do, but only batted 86 times in 73 games. According to the MLB.com story, at least one NPB team was interested in acquiring Green this season.

Green has batted .199 with 2 HRs and 12 RBI in 136 games and 226 ABs with the Diamondbacks (2004-06) in his 3 year career. Also of note, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a working relationship with the Nippon Ham Fighters, but are not obligated under any means to send him there.

Is there a posting system for players going from MLB to NPB now, too?

Anyways, he looks like a typical AAAA player, he crushed AAA pitching but hasn't done much at all in the majors. Some of these guys can do great in Japan, but are by no means guaranteed. It would be interesting to see if he can adjust. A doubles machine second baseman would be very useful on some teams.

If everyone that attempted to leave their home country to play a sport elsewhere were a guarantee, we would all play baseball.

I would think that the 2005 MVP of the Pacific Coast League would be a fine addition to any team in Japan. It's obvious Green suffered from bench rot in the Major Leagues, so it would be wrong to judge him by those numbers. According to another article I read, he plays all infield positions and outfield positions. Seems like he would be invaluable in filling some of the holes Nippon Ham will surely have after the loss of Shinjo and other free agents. His 2005 numbers are absolutely amazing!

Green would be a nice addition to the Fighters or any other team, as it is rumored that Nippon Ham is talking about acquiring him.

To judge Green from his major league numbers is unfair. He was primarily a bench player, mostly left to just rot as he got nearly no at-bats. He has hit very well in the minors and with an opportunity can hit.

[Editor's note: Is this a repeat? I recall reading this before.]
